True Dog ‘Obedience’

The only way to true ‘obedience’ is with your dog viewing you as his or her leader and naturally respecting that position. You as your dogs caregiver need to learn how to be and act in this role, not just as the creature that dishes out dog roll (or other such morsels) for a ‘trick’ performance.

What are you rewarding in your dog’s training?

Makesure you are not inadvertently encouraging your dogs reactionary behaviour.
If you are giving your dog ‘treats’ while your dog is being reactive in an attempt to distract or ‘create a positive association’ with the people or animals your dog is reacting to, you may in fact be rewarding and encouraging that reactionary behaviour. Instead only reward AFTER your has behaved in a more positive way and is relatively calm.

Separation Anxiety is about your dog missing his or her ‘babies’ not you as ‘Mum’ or ‘Dad’ as you may have believed…

Focus on your leadership first.

Conventional Dog Trainer?

A reoccurring point keeps coming to my attention. I have been getting alot of clients lately that have used ‘dog trainers’ and their recommendations - I use this term loosely as no qualification is required for this proclamation- and their dogs are very much still exhibiting the same behaviours (and sometimes bonus ‘negatives’ thrown in) for what they sought help for originally. Dogs Best Friend will always take the time to get to the route of the problem, not simply advise tips and training ‘tricks’ for individual behaviours. [Read More…]
