Dog Training - Meeting other dogs on the lead and making ‘friends’?

Stop the Press! Your dog does not have to be ‘friends’ with every dog or person it meets on a walk.
Think of it this way, do you stop and chat to everybody you meet as you walk down the street, I think not.
Unless it appears both parties are very much wanting to meet each other -
Whenever your dog comes into contact with another dog (or person), you can simply ignore the other dog (do not tighten your grip on his/her lead - which he/she will respond to and try not to tense up). If your dog responds by letting the other dog pass without too much reaction, praise and possibly reward (depending on your training situation).
I believe we try to force some dog friendships, but why?
